If you take a look at my signature you can see the size of my tank and the fish in it. My question is are the fry creating a lot of waste?

I'm a little bit worried now that they've been born that I am overcroweded. I know if I'm not overcrowded now I will be in another month or so.

Also both of my swordtail females are heavily pregnant..and I'm sure they will give birth in the next week or two.

Gees I was complaining when my fry were dieing and now I'm complaing cause too many are surviving lol :)

I thought if I kept all the fry in the main tank that a lot of them would get eaten...but there are just heaps still alive and now the big fish don't even go for them.

Maybe theres no need for me to worry?

Thanks!! :)

yes people say they cause amonia spikes and such but i have never had problems .......... i have about 15 molly fry in a trap it is best to keep them in a large tank with alot of water movement (my personal opinion)

You know when I bought these fish (the livebearers) I didn't know how easy they were to breed nor did I know they gave birth so often. If I knew then what I know now I think I would of just bought male guppies. Now though I'm attached to the females so I can't even think about giving them back to my lfs.

I'm gonna have to look into getting a larger tank as I'm sure I'll want to keep some of the fry. I already have my eye on one just have to convince my boyfriend lol :D

This is the first time I've left the fry out in the main tank usually I keep them in a breeding net too. They are growing a lot faster being out on their own though.

Thanks for your help!!

Well fry in a "fry tank" do cuase alot of waste cause of the way they a treated. Fry need to eat more meals, higher temp, longer light.

But any jump in amount of fish can throw of the bio cycle.

I would really sugest getting a fry tank. 10g tank with heater and old style sponge filter, maybe some easy grow live plants. Not a fancy tank but it worth it in the end. Better fry to full growen fish ratio. Faster growing time. Less stress on the other tank. And alot less eaten fry.

If you don't mind the ugly look of the tank, try putting lots of java moss. My 15g contains about 40 platy "fries" ranging from 1/2 inch to full 2 inches. It is full of java moss and java fern. It is filtered by Aqua Clear 200 and two sponge filters.

Never lost any fish in that tank before, but I have to admit the growth rate is not as fast as in more sparsely populated tank, so watch out for that! By the way, I do a 40% water change ever 2 - 3 days on this tank...

Due to java moss population, I don't feed the real small fries with any special food so water quality from food is never an issue for me.

But this tank sure looks ugly...

By the way, despite 40 platies already present, I just saw 8 more little ones swiming between java moss! (looks to be about few days old) This never happens to me on tanks without much java moss.

If you use the common inches per gallon rule, this tank is soooo overstocked, its not even funny! ;)
