Any ideas? What do the fish do when I turn off the light? My old man thinks they just swim all night but this can't be right can it?

I think that it would depend on the fish i have a nightfish and that defanetly sleeps and a think some fish might just have small cat naps for a short period every now and then

fish don't have eye lids which means they are not asleep and always alert fish rest at the bottom of the tank at night conserving there energy.

Yes, they dont sleep but rest... im not sure I get it myself

most fish spend time in an "energy saving" mode - in that they are not darting about, searching for food etc etc, which is probably called sleep but not the "same" sort of sleep that us land dwellers call sleep!!!!

many fish/animals have to keep moving so as to continually push water through their gills and in turn get oxygen >>> breathing

fish "may" sleep but as research suggests - "we just dont know that bit yet"!!!!! :)

Fish SLEEP, dont believe me, buy some yo-yo loaches and watch them swim and all the sudden fall the the bottom of the tank for 10 minutes on their side haha

lolol - i WOULD FREAK thinking they are deaded if they did this !!!

Though not seemingly is common in freshwater: try a clownfish, the funny little devils not only sleep, they do so on their sides, usually on top of your powerhead *mutters* the number of people this scares the crap out of.

LOL - I read about clownfish doing this and when me and my husband went to an LFS there were a few on their sides. He was horrified as he thought there were loads of dead fish in the tank. He didn't believe me when I told him what they were doing!

i have 2 kissing gouriamis, and they both settle down to sleep,
once my mum thought they were dead and tried to catch them but when she caught them she realised they were alive

one sleep by my filter,on a slate, and the other sleeps on my cave.
