My friend has 2 small butterfly koi and 2 fancy goldfish temporarily in a tank in the house.

While cleaning the gravel today she sucked up what looks like a 4inch long worm, cream coloured an thinner the ends than in the middle. She describes it as being just like the worms her dog had once. She thought she saw it wiggle when she first saw it, but it's not moving now.

The fish seem to be okay.

Has anyone got any idea what it could be? :shout:

Do fish get worms that big and how do we treat them? :S

I'm going to see her tommorrow and look at it for myself.

Please help if you can.

Yes fish can get parasitic worms, but i am not certain on the particular types/species that effect coldwater species. My guess is that its likely to be a leach or a tapeworm. If you can get any pics of it that would be of much help  .

it`s probably a type of flat worm, i`ve seen them in one of my mates tanks and its been no problem before, a copper treatment should kill off any more if she spots them

I'll take my camera with me tomorrow.

Thanks for the swift replies!!

Sounds like a big-ass nematode worm. My synadontis eats them before they can get that big, so tbh i dont even know if they can get that big.

Does she or anyone in her family feed live foods? It could also be fish waste.

Turns out I didn't need a camera - I recognised it straight away.
