I'm thinking of getting one for my 5 gal. I just want one and would hate if i got one and it populated into a few hundred. So, will they reproduce with themselves?

Some females snails can carry sperm for 3 months.

How would I know then who was a male if I walked into a store and wanted to get a male? Would I have to buy two or three and the one that doesn't reproduce would be male?

Do a search on them on how to sex them.

If by "mystery snail" you mean "pomacea bridgesii", they're very easy to control population. They're tough to sex, but they have to leave the water to lay eggs. They are a big, very visible pink mass above the waterline (usually on the glass, but in an aquarium filled to the top with water, they may lay on the underside of the hood, or filter parts or the heater. They look like wads of bubblegum or cotton candy. Just remove the clutch to prevent hatching. They're much easier to control than snails that lay small, transparent clutches underwater.
