HI there. I had some great advice from the member fishkies on my new 55 gallon tank. I am trying to decide what kind of community to inhabit it! I love Angelfish and African chichlids. Are they compatible? If not, what beautiful fish go well with chichlids? I would love a variety of fish in my tank, and I have heard that chichlids should only be with chichlids. Please advise, thanks!!!

Angels, which are New World cichlids, will not work with most African cichlids. Different body language means different signals during times of aggression, which both have. This usually ends up with a tank full of torn up fish.

If you are wondering what fish go with Old World cichlids I can move this to that section for you. Much of the answer depends on the size of your tank, and type of filtration.

With the exeption of kribs, NO, African cichlids do not go with Angels. They have different water requirements and in general, African cichlids should only be kept with other Africans.

Angels make a great addition to a tropical community tank. To help with stocking, I'd really need to know what size tank you have - angels require a tank of at least 18" in height to accomodate their substantial "height" when mature.

ETA - After reading Tolak's post, I realize I might have read your post wrong - Angelfish are cichlids, just NW cichlids. Do you want NW or African?

Well I love african chichlids, but I am leaning more to angelfish and just need help with suggestions on what other fish to add without trouble from the angelfish. I want a nice array of top, middle and bottom dwellers with enough space to move about... and no fin nippers! EEK! LOL.

Angels and Africans are not really a good mix, It can be hard to find fish to mix with africans because they are grumpy little buggers:) One fish that you can mix with cichlids would be a Red Tail Shark. Not a rainbow shark, you can tell the difference as a rainbow has all red fins, a red tail just has the red tail. Red tails get a little bigger than rainbows and are usually more agressive which works well with cichlids. You cant mix red tails as they wont tolerate their own kind so only 1 red tail per tank. They are beautiful fish though and Ive always had a red tail shark in every cichlid community Ive kept with great success!

Oh almost forgot,a Banded Leporinus is another fish that will do really good with africans, just google the name, they look like leopard sharks, very cool! Ive got one in my cichlid tank right now, he's great!

Remember that these do well with moderately or more aggressive fish , Angels will get picked on by them.

And they are actually Cichlids not chichlids just so you know! :)

oh my gosh you had to point that out! EEK! SO embarassed now....ok ok... cichlids. LoL
