has anyone here ever tried DIY lighting?

how much money did it save you?

I DIY'ed my metal halide fixture. Bought a used Icecap ballast, slightly used bulb (3 months old), used reflector, and used some wire I had laying around, grand total of $90. A fixture like that brand new would cost me around $150. I've found subjectively that building your own Halide setups is generally MUCH easier than trying to build your own flourescent setups and beat the price.
