hi i have just found out how to make my own co2, is it hard to maintain or is it as simple as it looks? it was basicly a 2 litre bottle, sugar ,yeast, a air line tube, a airstone and warm water. any advice would be great

Simple as it looks....i think you just need a diffuser, i`m not sure if the air stone will work, dont think there is enough pressure....but for the price of a diffuser, might as well just get one! Loads of exact mix ideas if you search the forums! But yea, basically what you said. The only maintainance is changing the mix every week.

I baught the nutrafin system, which is £20. All you get is a container (a bottle) some rubber tubing (tubing) some """"active""" ingredient which i dont use anyway (which is basically what i use now , yeast and baking powder in a packet!) and then u need to supply your own sugar and water!!!!!

So yea, thats all it is!

Good luck!

ok thanks for the quick reply. where can i get a diffuser from? and what does it look like?
thanks

its like a ladder..that the bubbles climp up thus holding them in the water longer and alowing them to diffuse into the water!

ebay..other than that...the nutrafin kit is £20 and very tidy! I would recommend...although i am trying to go pressurised now!

An airstone will work and, surprisingly, it works pretty well. You could also pump the co2 into the filter inlet. The impeller will burst up the larger bubbles into smaller ones making them diffuse into the water better.

You can get a nutrafin diffuser on its own from here But to be honest its almost worth getting the whole kit as it includes everything you need, saves making a DIY one, but guess that depends on how good at making stuff you are! I'm to lazy for that!

Sam,

I got a nutrafin kit, then made my own DIY one a few days ago. They both work equally well, but to be honest the DIY is no way as nice and tidy and doesnt have the diffuser! For £20 for the nutrafin u cant go wrong, imo well worth the money, especially if your gonna fork out for the diffuser anyway! Only think is, remember to modifiy it to add a waste tank/cylinder just incase!!! (suppose thinking about it, that requires DIY anyway!! )

Gwikim - i understand that if you push the CO2 through a stone it will make smallers bubbles therefore allowing more surface area for diffusion, but with CO2 being relatively hard to dissolve is it not more about how long the gas in the water for rather than the surface area of the bubbles! Even tho the bubbles are smaller are they not still just gonna shoot to the top.

I think an upturned jar sounds a better option or like you said (and the way i do my DIY system) - through the filter inlet

Very interesting!
Good luck,
