Diy Cannister Filter?

I know that DIY tanks aren't any cheaper than purchasing one unless they're ~125+. Is there a similar limit on when a DIY cannister filtration system becomes cheaper than a storebought?

I've seen some neat home-made sumps...but never a canister. I don't even know where one would start. If you have tanks that are that big, it's time to go to a pond supply place for your hardware.

I've often thought about doing this myself. http/www.aquaticsbykr.com/DIYCanisterFilter.htm is on the small size, I was looking around for 5 gallon buckets with threaded bungs in the lid a while back, similar to a 55 gallon drum. Couldn't find anything that small, there are ones in the 35 gallon range, which are way too big.

Tolak, that DIY link is pretty neat...but it sure looked like a lot of work!

The problem with diy cannisters is making sure the water flows through the media in the correct way and doesn't skip straight to the pump.
