Question. . .if I purchase a 10-gallon tank and divide it into two 5-gallon sections, would the Bettas stress if one side has a male and the other has one or two females?

Thanks.

aslong as you put some plants along the divider they will be fine. but you can keep 2 females you need to have 1 or 4 to spread out agression.

They should be fine in a split tank, but a pair of girls is a no-no.

2 girls together would scrap, ideally you ned either 1 girl on her own or 4+, though most people would say no less than 6 :)

Hope that helped!

No, 2 females wouldnt work and plus a 5 gal section isnt even big enough for say a group at minimum of 6 bettas, so if i were you i'd have 2 males divided or a male and a female or 2 females divided. :good:

Okay, thanks everyone. I already have the male and the female, who I'm looking to upgrade into larger homes. So after I cycle the tank, is there any species of fish that I can safely put in with the female or is she better off alone?

I have two girls in a 65 litre community tank and it's always touch and go. It is very well planted and they can keep out of each other's way but I still seperate them (one in a breeding trap) when I am out of the house or overnight. It's also only a temporary measure.

I'd only recommend groups of 4-6 as a minimum, and that many wouldn't go well in 5 US gallons. Best off with one betta in each section.

Females can be just as temperamental as males. Also - not many fish apart from bettas are OK in spaces as small as 5 US gallons. Shrimp are a good thing to try, as are snails. You could also try dwarf/pygmy corys as bettas tend to tolerate them. Personally, I'd probably leave them on their own. Bettas like to be alone.

Bettas like to be alone.
That's fine then. I don't mind keeping them alone. Both are great little fish. The space is small for each, but both are Bettas from LFSs who do not take good care of their fish, so them having the 5 gall. each will be like a plush estate to them!
