Am going to be getting a 3' x 12" x 15" tank soon, and I want to divide it - was wondering about having 3 divides in there to make 4 sections in total as follows:

| Male | Sorority | Pair of GBRs | Male |

The left and right sections would be 6 inches wide each, and the middle sections would be a foot wide each. With substrate the actual swimming depth would be probably about 12-13 inches and the tank is 12 inches front to back.

Do you guys think this would work? How many females could I fit in a section like that>?

The sections would each have a little air powered filter, and the dividers would be that plastic canvas stuff so there would be some water flow. I'd also put the heater in the GBR section to make sure none of the bettas burn themselves on it.

Not sure about sand/gravel yet, but definitely a mix of live/fake plants. the dividers would also be going above the water level and have a condensation tray on top of the tank so no jumping!

Anything I've missed?? Thoughts/comments/suggestions?

PS. If the middle section would be too small for enough females to make a sorority worthwhile then I would make the male's sections bigger and have a group of GBRs in the middle instead:

| Male | GBRs | Male |

Personally, I think that the rams need at least a 18 inch section of the tank for a pair. If you do not divide the tank at all, you can fit 2-3 pairs in there, but no more. Same goes for female Bettas, but 5-6 for half the tank or 10-12 for the whole tank.

The dividers and set up sounds good thought unsure of sorority and GBR status. Other than confirming that you seem to have thought of everything! Just ensure you get water flowing throughout the tank (no matter how limited) with some sort of spray bar or tubing :good:

Sorry rereading that if each section has air flow that probably would be best, as long as the filtration is enough for the tank overall and bioload you should be good to go :good: I have one fitler with tubing to the other side to ensure flow goes one end of the tank to the other but have problems with algae this way, your way thinking more about it might be better

Hmm... the other option is just divided for males, but I kinda feel like a 3 foot tank for only 4 fish would be a bit of a waste lol. Although I could put some pygmy cories in I suppose...

But I really want rams...

This is going to take some working out...

You can still stick with the second option if you give each male 9 inches on each side with only one pair of rams in the middle. :good:

I'd go with the Male | GBR | Male idea if you're that set on having rams . 4 fish in a 3 foot tank is NOT a waste of any sort. An understocked tank is always better than an overstocked one. Just a few healthy beautiful fish with plenty of room in a well planted tank will make a vastly happier tank than a load of cramped unhappy ones.
