the-wolf has informed me that red shale, like other shales, contains sericite, a form of mica. it is therefore unsafe for use in aquariums as it will leech aluminum, magnesium, iron, and other nasties into the tank over time.
so i am dismantling the rock terrace i made by supporting a flat piece of red shale with beach pebble pillars. i finally found a lfs that sells red slate, so i'm thinking of knocking off the siliconed shale and reusing the 3 beach pebble pillars.
how should i go about removing it so i make as little a mess as possible and don't injure myself in the process?
