We recently bought two fish that we were told were swordtails (they have 2 long parts to the tail not 1) but have noticed white patches on their tails.

We thought it was white spot so we put in a chemical that said it should kill all the bacterial and fungus infections including white spot. That was almost a week ago and the spots are still there and are even a bit worse. Is there any other way to get rid of it?

What are your water parameters? (ie- ammonia, nitrite, nitrate) What do the "white spots" look like? What medication are you using currently?

we have tested it ourselves for nitrate and it seems to have no nitrate?! and we will be getting it tested for the rest as soon as the LFS opens. It just looks like little slightly furry white patches on the tail. We used methylene blue which we thought would help but just read the box and not too sure if its actually for white spot, it just says 'for a variety of fish diseases' but isnt white spot fungus not a disease?

hmmm, i had a look at the link and to be honest my fishes white patches dont look like the ones on the siamese fighter. We had our water tested and apparently everything is ok but the fish seems to have got worse. We also asked them at the LFS and they recommended the stuff we're already using and couldnt think of anything else.

The fishes patches arent really white anymore and the tail seems to be almost eaten away to nothing (when i say eaten away I dont mean by other fish but more like its just dying off!)

could this be fin rot? we used a chemical that supposed to get rid of that but it doesnt seem to have worked.

we've currently used methylene blue and tetra medica general tonic which should cure finrot?
