I was just curious being new to having cichlids, whats the common diseases they get, and what type of treatment is best to stock for them, all i have is 5 labido's and thats all il be getting, but i like to stock stuff just incase of emergencies..

Any help would be good thanks :)

Well, when I had insufficient filtration mine used to get internal parasites a lot and the very last time they got Ick. All where easily cleared by the best treatment I have found; Jungle Labs Parasite Clear and Ick Clear. I stock up on Parasite clear just in case and works fantastic.

5teady, personally i cant remember ever having a disease problem with cichlids, its no where near as common as livebearers getting sick (in my experience), i think i had a Convict with fungus thats it. Never had any sign of disease in my malawi tank

BUT.... i have lots of different fish, and anyway, here's my advised list of what to stock (others will have their own views obviously)

Bog Standard recommendations, covers a lot of different common problems
Protozin
Melafix
Pimafix
Internal Parasite specific meds (i used to use Flubenzole, not sure if its spelt right, now i think Wormer Plus is the one)

Added reasurance if you can afford it (i recommend this and i keep it myself on top of the above list)
Myxazin

I also have used Interpet medications in the past and found them okay

ALso, being a livebearer keeper i suggest a supply of dishwasher salt (seriously)

EDIT: i am not completely sold on the effectiveness of Melafix and Pimafix but you could say that about almost any meds, but i like what i hear and read about it, and i have used it in the past with no problems and its "helped", i just have never had to rely on it as a first line action against disease, its a bit more "first aid" i think, very good for wounds and a very safe meds by all accounts for your fish and tanks (from what i hear), too expensive in my view!!!!

Thanks for replys, i will be sure to get some of the items listed to be sure :)
