I went to Petco today to buy a new 30 gal tank and to also pick up a blue dwarf gourami. While we were looking around we noticed fish in a tank and had a big sign on it that said "quarintined, diseased fish." We asked the manager of the department about them and he told us that they recieved them in their shipment and were suffering from different diseases. He told me that they are treating them and will be for sale when they recover, if they recover. This is the first time we have been to this particular store. Would any of you buy any that were sick???

At least they're quarantining them and have them marked. Most places just sell away. If I thought they had been treated and they looked healthy, I'd buy them but I'd quarantine them again for 3 weeks when I brought them home.

I actually don't think thats the case. All 4 of my LF's I have seen soemthing like "these fish are ill and being qaurantined. Therefore they are not for sale".These are even big chain stores :good:

I've never seen a chain store do it and I've see plenty with sick fish, especially Walmart.

Our PetCo quarantines sick fish although they sadly seem to get it often, especially with Tetras. I've bought recovered sick fish before but never fish that were still sick. The closest I came to was getting a severely malnourished Candy Stripe Pleco that I was able to return to health.

After my issue with a diseased discus, no. All the homeowned stores i know( that is alot), treat and dont sell diseased fish, unless they have returned to help. But I remeber in petsmart that there whole lot of swordtails( about 4 tanks) all had fin+tail rot, and velvet, and they werent treating then and they were selling them.

depends im lucky i have a QT i have had 2 mollies form our lfs for free as they could not seem to make them better, with a bit of care and attention they pulled through and are fit and healthy now with all the rest of my mollies :)

I would certainly not buy diseased dwarf gouramis as they are likely to carry an incurable virus. In fact, I wouldn't buy dwarf gouramis full stop, because they are likely to carry an incurable virus. I can understand the rationale behind people buying bettas with finrot or something else easily curable, but I wouldn't; you're only encouraging the store to sell sick fish which can then spread infection around people's tanks.

depends on what the disease was, what kind of fish it was, if I could cure it with minimal hassel, and if the store had more of the same fish. I've never yet bought a diseased fish, and probably won't, but you never know... Oh I may also buy it if it's like 50% off, but I can still cure it

to me a shop with quarantined fish is a good sign, in an environment like an lfs there will always be incidents of disease, that they deal with them professionally by treating it and not selling the fish until they are well is a positive sign IMO :D

my lfs sometimes has signs on one or two of the tanks saying something like "we have spotted a problem with these fish and they are currently in quarantine being treated" or something, and i dont really spot any problems with the fish in the tanks that dont carry this sign. its a good lfs though, the one i always go to.

Personally i wouldnt buy a sick fish, as sometimes i have enough trouble keeping alive the ones i already have
