disease question

Check it out on this link :) ;

Its reasonably common with fish and is mainly caused by not acclimatising fish properly or doing water changes with water that is too cold/hot for the tank, also jostling the fish around too much while they are in their transport bag when you buy them can cause it too; ammonia can also cause the desease and somtimes bacterial infections aswell.

Haemorhagic septicemia?
does that have anything to do with fish? i looked it up on google and got results for cattle and water buffalo
try google with just the keywords: septicemia fish. You'll find lots of stuff. Tokis was very helpful and gave me this disease name awhile back and I did a lot of research for my situation.

Septicemia

Supplied by muse.

(see also hole-in-the-head disease, caused by the same bacteria)

Symptoms:Often first appears as redish bruising under the skin of the fish around the base of the pectoral fins. Septicemia is fatal if not immediately and aggressively treat.

Causes: Hemorrhagic bacterial infection contracted from wounds or exposure to other (highly contagious) fish. The result is rapid organ failure and death. May become dropsy.

Treatment:Quarantine fish and feed medicated food (especially Medi-Gold or Metro-Meds). In the UK, people have had good results with Interpet Anti Internal Bacteria #9.

article 2.

Bacterial Disease

1) Aeromonas hydrophila (Bacterial Hemorrhagic Septicemia)

A) Gram negative motile rods

B) Effects many freshwater species and usually is associated with stress and overcrowding.

C) The clinical signs and lesions are variable.

The most common finding is hemorrhage in skin, fins, oral cavity and muscles with superficial ulceration of the epidermis. Occasionally cavitary ulcers (similar to A. salmonicida) are observed. Exophthalmus and ascites are commonly observed. Splenomegaly and swollen kidneys are common. Histologically, multifocal areas of necrosis in the spleen, liver, kidney and heart with numerous rod shaped bacteria are observed.

D) Diagnosis is rendered by culturing the organism from affected animals: Remember this is a common water saprophyte with a great variation in virulence in serotypes.

E) Disease is transmitted via contaminated water or diseased fish.

My Golden Zebra Danio is suffering from a hole that almost goes through its body. It all started with red streaks, etc... and sounds like Septicemia. After this post I'm going to euthanize it, but my question is... How contagious is it? Am I too late for all my other fish? Will they get this sickness too? My Queen Loach is starting to breath heavy too, and 1 of my 5 Pristella Tetras is breathing heavy too. FYI - I'm currently treating with Melafix. What else can I do?

Septicemia isn't a flesh eating desease by nature so you most likely have somthing else, columnaris is much more likely. Could you give anymore info as to how long the fish has had the desease and what it looked like at first and how it progressed? The more info you can give, the more acurate diagnosis we can give you and what meds to treat it.

Update:

I euthanized (sp?) the danio. I'm a little worried about my Queen loach, who is currently hiding and breathing fast. One of my tetra's still looks like it has popeye and is breathing fast too. (which I'll fix with Melafix, after completing my treatment with Malachite Green)

The weird thing is, all my other fish (3 rams, 4 other tetras, 1 danio and my pleco) are all looking as healthy as can be. I don't have an option to isolate the sick ones, however I may have a lead on a used 50 gallon set-up that I might pick up this week. (waiting on a response email from the seller). Then, for the time being, I'll have a "hospital" tank until I sell my current 20 gallon. Sorry for all my rambling, got any other ideas for the sickness?

With the heavy brathing can we take a look at your water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph, what size tank how many fish and which type, also is there any red inflamed gills, or flicking and rubbing on objects by the fish that are heavy breathing.

Last update on the health of my fish:
My levels have been steady at Ammonia = 0, Nitrite = 0 and PH = 7.0 for about 2 months. Yes, my only danio was flicking against rocks, however I finished my 3 day medication with Malachite green and he (as well as my loach and tetra) stopped and got better! Cool eh?

Since there was some health seen in my fish, I bought a new tank. Whatever parasites/diseases that are left in my 20 gallon are going to be killed off from getting cleaned out.

Anyways, no more talk about these diseases, I don't want any more to happen upon me! ;)
