Discusting Algae Taking Over!

Hello there - ive had this problem for a while now on a small scale but now i have to have the lights off or id have a green jungle!!

Basically i have this awful dark green algae its long and stringy like grass and its growing at an alarming rate.
the other day i put in a rock, and within about 8 hours - it was covered! its that bad!

i have tried Algae control, and waste control but im at a fail

i have had the lights off for about 24 hours, should i keep pursuing it? or will it not help?

also is it ok for my fish to be eating it? my platy and ottos are havin the occational munch cos their poo is occasionally algae coloured.

ive tried cleaning the tank - but it still dosnt help.

Don't worry it's just hair algae and most of us have battled it at one time or another. I introduced 8 amano shrimp to my tank and they do a fantastic job of keeping it at bay. When you say it's long - how long exactly?

it will go away but if u have green water....need to buy a better filter , I did that and my tank is getting better , I dunno if I need the uv steriliser anymore

my water is crystal as i have a week old elite filter & my original fluval filter running - its just the algae getting up my nose ^^
im thinking of adding shrimp...just gotta get to a petshop!
