Actually, I've looked on their website and it appears to actually be a functioning ecosystem. Of course, I've not read much on here about the ethics of them, but I believe the website said that each ecosystem comes complete with micro-organisms which assist in the cycling process. I'm not sure how the ammonia factor plays in. I would love to see some research and reviews on these. I'm certainly not going to get one as they are quite expensive, but they are gorgeous.
If you look in the reviews, read the very first one. Not sure where the info came from, but it sounds like they know way more than me. I'm actually surprised I've never seen a discussion here about these before.
Somewhere on this forum there was a discussion ages ago about a very similar product which was totally sealed and supposedly needed nothing added.
This however is not the case, we do water changes etc on tanks to replicate the natural topping up of waterways/ creeks/ rivers/ lakes and ponds through rainfall. The rainfall in the wild helps necessary nutrients and micronutrients re-enter the food chain. replenishing what as been used up by the various plants and animals using that water system.
Personally I would avoid this type of product, the sellers are not out to look after the best interests of the creatures they are selling.
