Well cared for Discus: 8-10 inches. 8 inches is supposedly the max you can expect if you are keeping them in a well planted tank from what I've read.

And yes a 55+ gallon tank is best because they are a schooling fish and should be kept in groups of 5+

if possible a tall tank because of the height of the fish and they seem to like deeper tanks mine started of in a 18 inch high but i bought a 2ft high and they liked it alot more and did alot better

iv got my discus in a 46gal tank iv 3 at the mo but gonna add another one maybe two but even with the 3 theres still alot of space for them id say there size can vary as some if not kept right wont grow to there full size but if they are and reg water changes done they do get to adout 10 12" some bigger.
