I have discus in my 90g tank. When they reach sexual maturity I anticipate at least one pair will form. I have heard that when they mate they can become aggressive; if I get a pair do I NEED to remove them from the tank? I don’t mean for the purposes of breeding, I just mean does a pair need to be removed to spare the other fish in the tank of any aggressive behavior.

I personally dont know much about Discus, but i have a freind who has kept them for about 15 years, He never removes Discus even when 2 pair off and spawn. All that happens in his 5ft tank is the spawning pair end up at one end of the tank and the others at the other end...with the Apistos & Rams hovering about the middle

Dont know if that helps.

In a tank of that size there shouldn't be any need to remove a pair, they will have plenty of room to guard their eggs. As DarkEntity said the other fish get shoo'd to the opposite end of the tank.

They will have a go at the other fish if they get close to the eggs, but you neednt remove them. I have five spawning discus in a community tank and spawnings every week. They will fight anyway as hey are cichlids, best advice is to watch them and see what happens

ok thanks for the help, now what about actually raising fry. I do have a 21g that is empty, this would make a good spawning tank for a pair wouldnt it?

I should let a pair spawn once in the tank right? Ive heard that the first time they dont really get it right...hmm funny sounds familiar...

depends on the dimensions of the tank...

Takes more than once mate, mine are still practicing :hey: I end up n knocking the eggs onto the substrate if the fighting gets too bad - its not normally too bad though
