I have repeatedly btried to keep discus with other species and had problems with other fish bullying them, Is the only way to keep them in a single species tank?
A single species tank is usually best. A large tank, 120 or better, sometimes works with other species and discus. They need non-aggressive tankmates that can tolerate the higher temperatures discus need.
If your intention is just to keep them rather than breed them, I have found that they are quite happy with neon or cardinal tetras and corydoras catfish as tank companions, in a reasonably well planted tank.
