Did you just get them kevin? How are they? Congrats on your new discus, I'm sure you're gonna love 'em. How many did you get? Mien didn't eat for the first couple of days, even the frozen brine shrimp. he used to just nibble it then spit it out. Now he pigs out whenever I feed it. I also use Jack Wattleys discus formula as a substitute, and the other fish seem to like it too. Anyway good luck with them.
You should always ask the LFS person to feed the fish before you buy them, especially rare, delicate or expensive fish, even more so if you are new to keeping delicate fish.
I'm sure they will probably start to eat eventually, but you have to be more careful on these sort of things then just rushing out and buying them.
My discus are 4-6" in size... I have 3 of them. I feed them Hikari Frozen Bloodworms and Hikari Discus Pellets... alternating each feeding. I also catch them eating the Hikari Tropical Flakes (meant for my tetras) as they sink.
Be patient... it could be that they're adjusting to their new environment.
i hope so but i have read in david's post that discus eat flakes and i on other sites too, it's just not theri fav
and since they were so cheap everyone the will be alot of customer that day if each asks them to feed the discus...would u do it if you were the shop owner?
Well my discus tends to pick at the flakes, then spit them out. It never actually consumes them, although I suppose it does gain some nutrients from this exchange.
You're going to have to dish out the money for better food. Just buy a month's worth of food and slowly feed them less and less and try getting them to eat the flakes or pellets or whatever. I don't think you'll have the best of results, but there's a chance.
He's right, flakes just don't give discus the nutrition they need. You absolutely must supplement with frozen/live foods or discus formula/beef heart mix.
