I was thinking about doing a 55 gallon discus tank after im settled when i move and I need info. For those of you who have discus, please list the following info..

Tank Size
Water Temps
PH Requirements
Food
What filtration setup do you have?
Substrate or no?
How often do you do waterchanges?

My tank is about 50 US gallons, the pH is 6.8 and temperature is 29C.
I feed them forzen bloodworms, brineshrimp and tetra pellets.

The filtration is done by the Juwel sponge box type filter that came with the tank and a smaller type for a 60 litre tank with spray bars.

The Discus love their substrate and when the feeding frenzy dis down they spend hours blowing into it to try and scrounge more food.

I do water changes of 20% once a week but was doing 20% every three days for the first 6 months.

i've heard of people doing daily 50% water changes
Isnt that a lot of stress on the fish? 20% every three days seems a lot better.

How did you cycle your tank for the discus? What substrate do you use?

I read about getting an aquaclear 500 and replacing the carbon with another sponge filter and putting a sponge filter on the intake as well.

I had 5 discus in a planted 40 gallon tank.
Temp: 83 degrees
PH: 7.4
Frozen beef heart, Bloodworms, Live CBW, Pellet food.
Fluval 104 and a fluidized bed.
Gravel
25% twice a week.

That was the original setup for 8 months. Discus are dirty fish and the gravel vac water changes where not enough to keep up with them. Plants were looking bad, and the fish did not look as good either. I set up a 29 gallon bare bottom tank with floating plants and java fern for my pair and sold the rest. I just use an aquaclear HOB filter for there tank. They have been in this tank for 5 months now and look much better.

Not sure where from MD you are from, I live in SE PA and made a 2hr drive below Washington to get my discus. Joe from Enchanted Discus has nice fish for a good price. He sells 4 - 5" fish for $25 - $35.oo each.
