If you going to get a good size adult pair a 29g would do but if your getting a bunch of juvies I would recommend a 55g. I would also recommend that you keep it a bare bottom.

Get the biggest tank you could afford that's my advice...but just keep in mine that a fully grown Discus would need 10 gallon for itself to be really happy.... And P.T. the reason why alot of Discus breeder and owners goes for Bare Buttom is that it's a lot easier to clean and it keeps the pollution down compare to having gravel...

Well for breeding bare bottom would be ok, but I would suggest sand. You dont HAVE to have a bare bottom tank. I kinda think thats silly myself if you are not breeding them. MY OPINION.

barebottom is definately not silly. if you plan on having big healthy fish, when they are young barebottom helps insure that. with gravel pieces of food can get trapped and rot, that will foul the water pretty quick with how much you feed discus, not only that but if the food is rotten and a discus finds it and eats it, that can lead to internal parasites and you may lose them. its not required, but if you are gonna start with young discus i would highly recommend it, it makes waterchanges sooo much easier cause you can get all the uneaten food and the waste out of there. you wont regret doing it.
