Discus Project

Realy depends on the dimentions. 3ndl3r's planned tank would be the absolute minimum for everything, from length, to height to wideth... :good:

120 x 40 front to back x 50 high. its basically a standard four footer

ahh, that's good. i was planning to use sand.

So i can buy Juvies, and put them in the tank with sand and rocks?
What about Bogwood? Or is that a No No?

James

The tank is 4ft(l) x 1ft(w) x 18"(h).

The 18" height is good but I think the 12" width is too small for Discus. The general recommendation is 15" and that can look cramped with adult Discus.

It would work for a while but eventually you'd need bigger. Good quality Discus that are well maintained will grow big, maybe 8" or a little more. Even more so if you want bog wood and plants...

Can work with careful scaping IMO. Sparcley decorated with sand should be OK for Juvis, provided it is staying clean. If it isn't, the decor will have to come out leaving just sand :good:

Anyone have anymore advice?
Currently in the process of building a small pond for the goldfish to be rehomed to.

I have been having a lot of people ask if Discus do better in a planted tank, and honestly, I don't see much of a difference in a regular, planted or bare bottom tank. Some people may believe that with more cover the Discus may feel more secure, but I have had both tanks and the fish seem fine in either way.
I don't know what to say after reading this at all ~ Well I guess you can consider me lucky I have a friend usually easy to contact in london (Canada) an expert on discus and breeds them regularly to, I was very lucky to come in contact with him to tell you the truth he even sold me a few of his discuss when I told him what I had planned. He has a 120gal us tall and thats his community tank they are all raised from juvs to adult in that tank with not problems at all. I have been monitoring them for the last 6 months he knew my fears about discuss and really wanted me to take my time before I got them to understand them(he didn't care about the money they where actually way cheaper than the stores).
I wouldn't consider myself an expert on these fish but on many others I have more than out done it, these are my most fav to see in a planted Community and the way i see it is they only look good in a planted tank. Meant actually understanding the speicies omg so many man made ones and understanding water quality and temps and there actual natural enviroment and diseases(Plague same as the anglefish as far as I know seems to be the most common killer of them compared to water quality). In his tank he don't have stunt problems at all he has one the size of the dinner plate, bigger than my 2 hands put together he raised in a planted tank from a juv. So really I don't understand why people say they can't be grown out in a planted tank there is actually no research on why not and have seen with my own eyes that they can but his tank is a 120 and mine is half of that but he has double the amount I am getting into I actually think he is over stocked! Total of 9 Adults and 3 juvs 12 plecs they bread inthere with out him knowin 12 corys aprox 5 baby SAE babies do a better job. about 2 dozen cardinals and 2 dozen of other tetris ~ I think really it comes down to the experience you have in the field and the work you are willing to do in the end! In that 6 month period I have seen him do a breed and only 20 servived in a 55 gal breeder and he ended up putting half in his main tank to grow them out and they actually grew out faster in the planted tank then the ones in the bare bottom later on they ended up sold and I actually got one from him he saved me one of those for 15 canadian they sell for 45-100 in stores. I would definitly say get in touch with a local breeder they will help alot more than you lfs for sure when it comes to them!

Sorry for taking over the thread but just some of the comments where kinda weird and thaught this might help clear some things up but I am no means of an expert on discuss at all ~ Other fish sure but not discuss.

hey

well its getting nearer to the time! As soon as i can get those goldfish in the pond!

Im planning to mature the tank with tetras and a pair of synodontis cats which i currently have in a 60l tank (don't ask)
Obvviously i will be keeping the tetras, but i'm not sure if the synos will be compatible.
Views?

Cheers

hmm, okay Rabbut, won't be risking it then.
Will have them in the tank prior to discus, just to mature it :good:
