Hello,

I have had this discus for over a year now and never had any problems until now, the other night i was doing a water change, when he decided to jump out of the tank and land on the floor :shout: i think i spooked him after i bent down to put some equipment away.

I quickly picked him up and placed him back in the tank, then turned out the lights and left the room so he could settle.

The following morning i noticed something on his rear fin, it is quite small but closer inspection it looks like 2 small white fluffy dots next to each other, i have been monitoring it for the past 2 days and it seems to be smaller in size now but it is still there, could you guys help me diagnose this?

He is eating, and acting like usual.

340L
Temp: 27-28c
Ph: 7.0 - 7.5
Amo - nit: nil

Other fish in tank: black widow tetras, neon tetras, angels, dwarf gourami's

Pics took from my phone so not great quality.

it could be an extremely minor case of white spot (ich)

I thought that myself, but after almost 3 days there is no other signs of it on the discus, or any other fish.

I really want to try and diagnose this before i start any treatment, but then again i don't want to leave it too long.

Ok during the water change i attempted to brush his fin with a plant, on the first attempt he seemed to like it, he did not move much, and actually came back towards my hand, so i tried again but this time he shot to the other side of the tank.

The white dot seems to have faded in colour now but it is still there and quite obvious when you look at him close up.

All the other fish still look fine and healthy, and the discus is still his usual self, i will leave it for a few days and keep a close eye on it, but i have a feeling i will be back.

Probably just a bit of damage from bouncing off the floor. Double up on water changes, bet it's gone in a week. I've taken damaged cichlids from breeding scuffles, changed 50% of the water daily for a week & seen them no worse for wear after 2 weeks.

only problem is it might be stressful having such a large water change done daily, i agree with your information but think it should be a smaller change, like 30%

It'll be more stressful if the damage turns into a more difficult to solve issue. I have yet to see large frequent water changes cause problems; discus breeders are known to do 90% water changes every other day.

I usually do a 30-40% water change every other day anyway, so ill do it everyday now for the next week or two, and let you know the results.

Thanks.

He is starting to look much better now, the white colour has gone completely, now its just a small translucent dot which seems to be getting smaller everyday.

Again thanks for your advice chaps.
