I was going to post this in the topic below, seems to have got sidetracked though onto breeding angels.

My own preference has always been the wild fish, but I have a soft spot for the big turq pictured below (currently about 7" diameter). I keep him in the stock tank with the wild discus I import, seems to help settle them quickly.

Brazilian Discus (Oeiras)

The Brazilian discus only arrived on Wednesday this week, a couple of weeks should see much stronger colours on them.

Very nice. Would you mind me adding some pics of my discus in this thread? My most resant purchase was of two wild caughts. One I was told is a heckle and the other I am not sure yet but it looks just like the ones you posted.

Beautiful Turquoise. At 7" that's one big fish too.

How long have you had him?
Hi Joe,

I've had this fish about 2 years now, reckon he has about another 1" left to grow yet.

Hi Amber,

Please add your pictures as well, might even be able to help you identify the wild types you have.

My girls are finally in bed for the night so I can actually get on here and get those pics up.

Some of these of my "heckle" are old (when I first got him). I couldn't get any new tonight because he wouldn't come out. He got nipped up pretty good by my spawning pair (who just got moved into their own tank FINALLY) and I think he might be getting a little fin rot on there!

Heres the old ones of the "heckle" which is what I was told he is.

Hi Amber,

Possibly your heckel is the 'Mari-Mari' strain as well.

Your other wild fish, I've had a quick look, possibly 'Nova Olinda' which is one of the blue discus strains but it's a bit difficult to tell from your photo's

Andrew

hard to tell from my photos or hard to tell from him being young still? Cause I think I gave you some pretty darn good photos there ;)

Hi Amber,

Diffiult to tell through a combination of size, fin damage and differences in the photographs (which is closest to the true colours of your fish > flash or no flash???).

Hi, I was planning to get 1 or 2 discus, but I have a limited butget right now. How much are the average priced at? I would love 2 pigeon bloods. are they priced from types or what? :X

Hi there,

Pricing will depend on size, colour strain, wild or captive, whether you source them from a breeder or the LFS and where you are based.

In the UK you are talking anything from a few pounds (through a breeder for juvenile fish) to probably some where in the region of £50 to £100 for LFS stock (and higher or lower, depends very much on whether the LFS specialises in these fish and where they source their stock from).

When looking for your own fish > quality, not price should be your first consideration (my own opinion :D ), you want fish that have a nice round shape and good colouration (and feed well on both dry foods (eg Tetra Prima) and frozen foods).
