Hi, I've spent the last two hours searching on this forum and from what I've read, an adult discus needs 10 gallons to itself. Ok, I've always wanted a discus tank and I have a 29gal planted sitting empty. Could I put a pair in there, or is that too much? My other concern is that my "discus dream" involved cardinals too. So what would I be looking at (tank size) in order to house two discus and a school of cardinals? I did read in my searches that it's best to have a group when they're young and a pair when they mature...could you just start with two adults? Thanks for your help!

I just wanted to add that I am honestly seeking knowledge, so if I sound stupid or clueless, I hope no one gets mad. I would never put I fish somewhere that wasn't suitable for them. I just thought since I have the empty tank I'd ask. Thanks.

how high is the 29g tanks btw?

and have you seen my discus thread? it has quite a bit of info in there thanks to Ken, CA and Ryan

i would say no on the 29 unless its a breeding pair. Discus like to be in groups, 6 is a great number, which means a much bigger tanks. thats just my opinion

A lot of breeders use 20 gallon tanks for there pairs. I think a 29 for a pair would be fine with a few cardinals. I would get larger discus around 5" if it's a planted tank. Young should be grown out in bare bottom tanks.

Thank you for all your replies, I was really worried that this question would be interpreted as a "Can I keep my Oscar in a ten gallon?" type question, and people would jump down my throat if it was totally wrong. Thanks everyone.
