I have raised a dozen discus from juveniles in a 106 (imp) gallon tank for about 10 months. 3 of the discus have grown to the size of saucers, 6 of them are about 15 to 17cm across and the other 3 haven't grown very much at all.
The 3 larger fish are dominating the tank (1 discus in particular). the other 9 spend most of the time hiding in a large plant and missing out on feeding due to the dominance of the larger fish.
I have a spare unused tank (complete set up) that I could separate fish into but I'm not sure that it would be the right thing to do and if so what fish(es) to remove.
I wouldn't want any potential separation to be long term but merely to bring on the smaller fish.
So my question is, is separating a good idea or am I creating bigger problems when I reintroduce the separated fish or should I leave the fish to sort themselves out.
I should add the none of the smaller fish have been physically injured by the dominant fish.
