My discus aren't eating and i would like to try some foods for them to see if they will eat it.
Anyone got any ideas?:)

Bloodworm, beefheart, I swear theres something soaked in garlic they love too.

i have a beefheart mix i got from my local discus supplier. its a dirty big block of beefheart mixed with all sorts and soaked in garlic. stinks the house out everytime i feed it but they love it!!! also a good mix of brineshrimp, bloodworm, tubifex and prima.

Im one those people who *really* hate beefheart and would never use it...

My discus loved:

DRY:

JBL Novo/Grano Discus
Tetra Prima
Tetra Pro Colour Crisps
Tetra Pro Vegetable Crisps
JBL Spirulina
New Life Spectrum Pellets (if you can get hold of it, this is the best brand on the market)

(usually i had a mix of ProColour, ProVeg & Prima and they got a big pinch once or twice a day)

FROZEN:

Prawn
Krill
Mysis
Artemia
Bloodworm
Cockle
Muscle

-------------

Best think i ever did was:

Blend loads of frozen foods (you can also buy packs of mix frozen seafoods from the supermarket), spirulina (can also use Nori seaweed sheets) and also grated raw garlic. I added a little water to make it a chunky paste and spread it out on a tray to make a sheet and froze it. When frozen i clingfilmed it and broke off a chunk each day.

Sometimes i added the budds (flowers) off the broccoli as well.

I always useda base mix of bloodworm, prawn and krill and anything else i added was changed a bit each time i made a batch.

Seafood protein is far better than beef protein.

I don't like the thought of beefheart either.....but i know the 2 discus that aren't eating would eat it as thats what they used to eat...

I've tried frozen bloodworm, brineshrimp but the others it says they can't eat.....
I've also tried tetra pro + prima
They look at the food.....and just don't look interested at all :(
The other 4 are eating fine though

Where does it say discus cant eat prawn/krill/cockle/muscle? etc...

They are more than fine, just a shame more people dont use foods other than bloodworm and beefheart.

On the frozen packets they don't say that the discus can eat it :(

I wonder if that is the Supafish's new frozen foods.. Its all been repackaged recently and as soon as it came in i faxed a complaint through. It says Bloodworm is good for cichlids, doesnt specify that its not good for Malawis, i've had to take it away from malawi customers and apologise on the companies behalf, makes me look an idiot though!

Its fine, the only things not worth feeding the discus are tubifex (tbh its not much good for anything), cyclops, rotifers and daphnia just because they are too small for the discus and personally i'd say beefheart.

Im not a big fan of things like 'tropical mix' because the artemia goes slushy when its mixed like that but otherwise ok.

Discus can eat pretty much anything, its whether they choose to eat it thats the question ;) I was mean to my discus, if they didnt eat it, they went without and when they saw the angels stuffing their faces, they soon realised it wasnt so bad. :hey:

If your discus aren't eating I would feed live foods for a while, try them on brineshrimp and bloodworm. Once they are eating you will be able to introduce other foods much more easily. Personall I feed alot of seafood to my discus and other fish. Mussels, scallops and prawns are good and fairly cheap.

I shall definately try and get some of this food tomorrow then, it was stuff like brineshrimp in garlic said weren't suitable for discus etc....but then i have heard so many people say it's fine..i have already got daphnia downstairs but i've never given it to the discus thats for the other fish.
I can't feed live food, i just think it's horrible :(
They are still not eating so worried :( they definately want some food but just don't like the look of any of this.....

When are you feeding? And what other fish have you got in the tank?

Might be worth doing night feeds for a while as well? Feed as you turn the lights out, your fish migh just be really nervous, arent they fairly new still? Let them eat in the dark over night and then gradually bring the time forward byt 10-15 minutes a week until they eat with the lights on (make sure lights are on and off at same time, discus like routine!).

other then bloodworms dipped in garlic extract.... mine seems to love Ocean Nutrition Prime Reef Flakes and Hikari sinking carnivore pellets.

I feed them Gamma Blister frozen food :)
