Discus Food

There is a lot of debate over this at times, and I know many keepers do feed heart as part, the base, or the sole diet for Discus and swear by it. It is worst as a sole feed, eben if you agree with feeding it, where it makes 100% of the diet with no suppliments. If you are going to feed it, you should make it as your own mix :good:

The link to fatty liver that I remember from the research I did after getting my discus (should have done that after  ) that makes me against it. The stuff is packed with Protien, and you can work with that if you like to oversee the claims of a rebel few :shifty:

If you do choose to feed it, make your own mix. There are many recipies on the net, but look for one that has about 5-20% heart base to the rest of the ingediants. Some mix dried foods with their mixes, and that is fine so long as it isn't going to fall appart when wet :good:

I dont know where rabbut gets his info from but I dont think its personal experience as much as it is pseudoscience. No offense.

None taken ;) Like anything else you read on the net, you should always do your own research into things with other off-line and on-line sources. You can never get a whole answer/argument from one persons opinion/experience. The "consensus" on a single forum usualy isn't enough to go by on its own either.

A diet of practically everything fishy food wise......I would add to the above:- beefheart, turkeyheart, krill, mussel, shrimp, prawn, whitebait ( some will some wont) a varied mix of dried foods..whatever they will eat, mine wont eat flake.(so it goes in the heart mix), bloodworm, cichlid mix.....

A fair few examples of foods there from Mike. I'm a bit :/ on the first two, but agree that all that follow are good foods :good:

as long as tehy are not on a single food they will do well.

That is something I deffinately agree with

All the best

i always feed mine beefheart (homemade mixed with fish, spirulina, garlic and other bits and pieces)and they have grown fat and happy on it. Also use tetra prima and freeze dried brine shrimp (their favorite) and so far (fingers crossed) i have not had an ill discus in the 2-3 years i've had them, so beefheart is staying on my menu

Your lucky I got two at the moment that won't eat. All the other fish are fine and happy but two of 'em.

Fish can adapt just like people can. Living in a glass bowl with tap water and plastic plants is pretty far from natural too, but I think we can all agree we have dont have problems subjecting them to that. I dont understand the issue with beefheart. I dont think discus are eating a lot of freeze dried food in the Amazon river. You could argue that beefheart is closer to their natural diet in that respect.
