Ok I'm rubbish, where's the section that tell you about these fishys?! I'm hopin they're ok for communal tanks....

Cheers :D

They are fine for communal tanks, so long as it is lightly stocked, over filtered, at least 18" tall and has a volume of 50g, with ONLY tankmates that are smallish and slow moving :good: Otherwise, forget them now :shifty: They are high-maintanance fish needing 3 feeds a day as adults, and 5 a day as juvniles. 50% waterchanges every other day for juvis and 50% weekly is minimum for adults. More is always better  Also, they need agroup of 5+, growing to th esize of small dinner plates...

The Polopterus may caurse you issues later Lokkochaa, they can be very nasty fin nippers.... The Hiplocat isn't a Hopplo cat is it? They can be a bad choice for discus also, as they are fast moving  Corries are fine with them, as are most slimmer bodies tetras :good:

Hi mic8310 :)

Most corydoras require cooler waters than discus need, but C. sterbai are beautiful fish that do very well with them.

I'll move your thread to the New World Cichlid section for you. :D

I wouldnt do corys with discus either. They are nocturnal and would spook the discus at night when they are sleeping. Discus do best in a species only tank. There are very few exceptions.

Im going to keep an eye on how it pans out, unfortunately i have no where for the Polypterus and the Hopolo cat to go so im hoping they will be good boys!!!

Been in a week and nothing is going near the discus and they seem very happy, luckily its not an exact science and some have different temperements

well I've just took the plunge into the discus world and they are addictive/ wouldn't like to advise as I'm just new to this myself but I keep kribs in with mine at the moment and never had any problems. also intend to add C. sterbai and bristlenose

The thing to note here, is that Discus are an advanced species that regularly fail to read out textbooks. Expect them to do/behave in the un-expected way and you'll be fine. People regularly have success with them with doing something that isn't recomended, but it isn't recomended for a reason; it fails for most...

I'm gald I found this thread, as last saturday we went across to Derwent Koi & Tropicals(was voted into the top 20 fish shops in the UK buy PFK readers) and it was the 1st time I've ever seen a Dsicus fish, they are absolutley stunning! I asked the lady who worked there and told her the size of my tank, 110L (80x35x50cm) she said I'd be fine with a couple of Discus, about 10 Cardinal Tetras and a couple of Corys.

I take it that opinion is disagreed with on here?

I'd also like to add I'm not going to rush into getting them, I'm currently trying to wrap my head around cycling my tank with amonia. So any potential purchase of a couple of discus is a long way away :)

You are right, and the store is wrong. Picture a dinner plate sized fish in your current tank, and you see why the consensus on here would be that your tank is too small :good: That is the size of an adult Discus. You also need a minimum group of 5....
