Discus Feeding Mishap!

So about 5 mins ago I was feeding my discus live black worms. Then all the sudden a worm swam up my white Diamond discus' nostril!!!!!!!!!!! I was panicking because the worm might cause havoc in the blocked sinus. But thankfully after a minute a worm crawled out of the nostril and into the mouth in went!

Phew I was so scared that the worm would be stuck there forever!!

Anyone know what fish "nostrils" actually do? Are they scent receptors or something? I figure they're not generally for breathing since many fish take water in through their mouths to pass over their gills?
