Discus Compatibility

Hello all I wonder whether anyone can help me out. I have been keeping fish for a while now and have a lovely communitity tank with my wonderful angles

I have recently set up a new 112lt tank with a heavy duty external filter. I would love to start keeping Discus and I have so far done some extensive research however there are so many conflicting view as to what can and can not be put with Discus.

Here is what I was hoping to do 4 Discus, 5 Rummy nose tera's (these are already in the tank), 6 Cardinal tetras, 2 Dwarf Gourami, 2 Blue Ram and 2 Kuhli Loaches.

Can anyone advise on the compatability of these with Discus and also with each other. I have read several articals that say Dwarf Gourami can be kept with Discus and several that state that they can not. Does anyone here have any experience of keeping these together?

I would focus more on keeping 4 discus in a 100L tank or is that a typo :good:

hi there,

generally with discus, tank mates should be as peaceful as possible. tetras are shoaling fish. they should be kept in groups of at LEAST 6+, preferably more. I don't think your tank is big enough for 4 discus. they can grow quite large. to give yo and idea of what you can keep with them, don't go with anything agressive or fast moving. you will also need to find fish compatible with a slightly higher temperature and more acidic ph. in my 200l tank i had 4 discus, 13 cardinal tetras, 9 sterbai corys and a queen arabesque. these all worked well as they were slow moving fish that kept themselves to themselves.

You should be looking at a large school (15-50+) of 2" tetras to keep discus company, but I wouldn't put discus near a 100 litre tank, let alone in one. They do have the potential to grow to 12" or larger (although rarely reach that size) and do better in a group of at least 6.

I recommend you go for a much smaller species of fish for your tank and wait until you are able to have a larger tank before you move on to discus.
