You can keep tham with any slowish fish, that are small relative to adult size discus. Would be a good idea to post a list of fish you are looking at.
As regards to water quality, they require soft water with a low pH. Ideal conditions for tank-bread fish are 6.5 pH with a GH of less than 9. For wild stock, a GH of 5 and a pH of 5 would be better. These are not beginner fish, as they are very unforgiving of errors with water quality or other issues. A 55gal tank is considered minimum, but as always, bigger is better. I strongly advise you to read up on these fish, and put in serious consideration before purchase. They can also prove expensive to keep, especialy in hard water areas, as an RO unit is required. With carful research though, they are easier to keep than their reputation, and stunning fish to see.

They are a peaceful fish that thrives in the same water conditions and temperature as the discus needs.

Discus really shouldn't be kept with any fish that are too aggressive. I have seen them kept with Dwarf Gourami and Angelfish with no problems, but take precaution when adding these guys. Other fish like large tetra and a few species of Corydora are fine with them. These guys require really clean water. I recommend a daily water change for Discus 3-4 inches, and adults should really get a water change twice a week. Feed them 3-5 times daily (again, more feedings for babies.) Ph and hardness don't matter too much, unless the Discus you are getting are wild. Discus need to be kept in groups, 4 or 5 is the minimum and each Discus needs 10 gallons to himself, this would mean a 50-55 gallon with 5 Discus should be the minimum you would want.
