i'm getting a nice deep tank in a few weeks and plan on keeping a few discus, are rams and clown loaches compatable? what else is there that i could add? i'm spending a lot of time planning this as i want it to be absolutly perfect(obviously!)

also what plants could i add and will a co2 unit be neccessary? i'm gonna do a fishless cycle but do i do that before adding plants or after?

i'm gonna set up an RO unit too cos i'm paranoid about the water quality!!

thanks in advance

Yes those will be fine together. A schoaling fish like Cardinal Tetras or Rummy Nose Tetras would do nicely.

You're going to need a pretty big tank for the loaches. It doesn't matter when you add the plants. If you have a tank already running, don't bother cycling - just run your new filter on an old tank until you're ready to start stocking or get some filter media from an established tank and put it in the new tank with a few fish to keep the bacteria fed until you are ready. With the plants, I like to put them in first so that everything is ready before adding fish.

I too when my tank is up, running and cycled want to put in Discus as the main fish. I love Rams too, especially Gold Rams, but will they be compatible with the Discus..... I thought that they would be too energetic for the docile Discus.... So I'm glas to see the recommendation of Rams and Discus....

Can I put in Tiger Barbs with the Discus as well?

actually, from my year plus experience w/ two pairs of rams in seperate tanks they are relatively docile fish as well - nothing compared to a tiger barb or danio

Slivershark- With todays high quite tank bred disucs they arent as fragile as they once where. In fact juvie discus grow better in harder water with a higher Ph. Unless you have ammonia, nitrite or nitrate from the tap you wont need an RO. But if you plan on breeding then you may need an RO as the eggs wont hatch in water that has high hardness.

LongNy-Tiger Barbs would get to active for discus. To bad though because that would look quite stunning.

Those fish will be fine. When i kept discus i had rummy nose and cardinals. as long as you stal clear of barbs!! They just munch everything!!

Thanks...Tiger Barbs and Discus would look great together, but I understand how they run the roost with activity.... JOHN NYC

thanks for the info, i've decided to get the RO anyway, think about it would you rather breath air in the city or the country?! i feel that these fish deserve it!

ok what about kilifish? i was thinking bout adding a cople of fivelined killis in with the discus but cant find anything on the compatability of these two species...
