:) It is amazing my mum has two discus and she got them off somebody else who said they were always spawning but the other discus ate the eggs :( How frustrating for the poor mummy and daddy :( Mum has seperated them from the other discus and left them in their own tank together and they have spawned and the eggs have hatched :hyper: I'ts exciting something we have never seen before. The father has gone dark in colour and is obviously preparing for the young to attach themselves to him when they come off the filter.Unfortunately they spawned on the filter even though mum had a cone in there with them. The little babies are tiny and attached to the filter wiggling around and one fell off and the mother picked it up in her mouth and put it back on the filter. They constantly blow on the babies and are so protective. But the question I have is what are the chances of the babies actually making it I've heard it's pretty hard to actually get them to survive.Any tips?It would be so sad for the two parents to lose them as they have never had this opportunity to get this far as previously when in with the other discus the others ate their eggs.Hope somebody has some good advice. :)

My discus always spawned on the filter pipe too. The fry will live off the yolk sack for two to three days after that they start seeking out the parents, they feed off the parents sides for five or six days, after that I gave them newly hatched brine shrimp for first food three or four times a day, until they were able to eat crushed flake or daphnia. Some of them also ate crushed flake from day 8, but it’s a bit messy so a lot of water changing was needed. It’s a beautiful sight to see the babies feeding and the care the parents take is wonderful. The problem is that on average there can be between two and four hundred babies. I didn’t have room to house that many, they would have been stunted or ill had I kept them cramped. The other thing I did was move the filter as the fry would have ended up in it. (the filter was a big one) I left the bar they spawned on in place and got a new one for the filter. Good luck with them don’t see why some of them wouldn’t survive.

:good: Hi Liam thanks so much for the advice it is priceless :D Well unfortunately mum lost this lot the daddy apparrently didn't have enough slime coat on him so mum bought some mineral stuff at the pet shop and that is suppossed to make the water conditions right.Well they are spawning again already and now from what you have said mum may have a chance to get them to live this time :) Hope so :) Well thanks soooo much again for your advice. It is much appreciated :good: Well with having so many babies that would be terriffic as mum has a few people lined up that would like some and their not even born  Cheers Liam :good:

How are they going? dont feed until day 7, then feed live bbs 3 times a day then when they reach 23 days old feed beef heart mix very finely grated from frozen, then from 35 days old start feeding tetra prima as the first feed of the day and then 2 beef heart feedings a day, by now they will be 1 1/2 inch long.

sorry iv only just noticed that this spawn didnt survive, good luck next time feel free to contct me for advice :good:

:) Thanks discusboy well they have already spawned again so we'll see what happens in the next few days. Thanks for the advice we might be using it.Hope so I really want them to survive :good: Cheers and many thanks :D

Do you have any other tanks up and running and ready to take put them so they can grow on? ideally they need seperating from the parents after 2 weeks MAXIMUM otherwise they will just continue to try and feed from the parents, which aint good for mum and dad.

:good: Thanks for the tip :) Yes mum can put the two parents back in the tank that their mates went into. She seperated the mates from these two so they could breed. All she has to do is take the parents out and put them back in with the others and the babies will have their own tank :) Thanks so much for the advice :D All the best from Steph :good:

Check out my friends site it has all the info you will need, over the next couple of days he will be selling his patented ''Dave's instant hatch'' it comes in 500ml bottles and is plenty for 10 spawns it will certainly increas your hatch rate and it also triggers pairs to spawn. That stuff is mint and works EVERY time. :good: good luck with this spawn :good:

:good: Cheers discusboy I'll check it out tommorrow when I've got some time up my sleeve cheers and many thanks :D :) :good:

Discusboy, you said that after day 23 up to 35 to feed beef heart mix. If you don't know how to make beef heart mix or you just can't get hold of any, what else do you think that you can use instead?

Hi sorry for the late reply, beef heart is the best fod for optimum growth in young discus. Start feeding it at 23 days and continue with it for as long as you like, i will feed it to mine all there lives. If you check out that site i posted go onto information, then click on the discus pic, scoll down and you will see a recipe for a beef heart mix i use. That stuff really is well worth making, if you feed it to fry you will really see the growth rates explode :good: When the fry are still small get a little piece of frozen mix (still frozen) and grate it over the tank with a cheese grater. Remember dont over feed as it will polute the water quick. I also feed it to all my fry, the growth rates are amazing :good: What size tank do you keep your fire eel in? and what do you keep him with?
Discusboy

ok, I just feelt a bit funny mashing up a beef heart that is all.

I keep my fire eel with alsorts. Despite it's massive size I is the most non aggresive fish I have ever kept (I have 2 and they are both the same) They love bloodworms like t was the best thing in the world and I keep them both in the same tank with sevs. silver dollars, angel fish, a BGK alsorts. I really love my tank.
