Are you sure you are up for breeding Discus?

Once you get a pair, you need an extra 29 gallon (not 20 gallon) to breed them in, and then a tank at least 50 gallons to grow the fry out. You will probably need an R/O unit in order to breed the fish, and for optimal growth of fry, changing 100% of the water daily or close to it. This would probably require another 50 gallon water holding tank, unless you got lots of buckets

I have got on just fine with two 120 litre tanks, 1 125 litre tank and treated tap water ok so i havent had a large survival rate but that was because of the young parents and it was their first batch.

As long as you have room to seprate the young from the parents and you are ready for the large water changes then its doable however unless you have a large 50 gallon plus to raise them in then you wont be able to grow them on as much.

A lfs will loan me a 75 gallon tank they keep small discus in (They'll keep the small discus) if i give them 51% of the fish when they are silver dollar size.

I have 12 buckets; don't ask why. And i do 75% changes in my discus tank daily.

Just curious, why 51% ? And will that be for every batch?? Silver dollar size Discus could be sold at around 15 dollars a pop (that's to LFS, cheaper if you sell them yourself also varies slightly per strain) if you do sell them to the LFS, and say you get a batch of 50 Discus, that would be 275 dollars to the LFS per batch!! You could buy yourself a 75 gallon tank (not just lent) with one batch! Seems sort of like a rip off to me, personally...

Yeah, kind of. It's kind of a "See how it works" thing. If it works and I like breeding them, then i'll get another 55-90 gallon grow out tank of my own.

Your questions dont make a lot of sense. Particularly the ones about colors. Typically you want to breed fish of the same strain. Cross breeding man made strains is very unpredictable and usually leaves you with very undesirable looking fish. They will get genes from the parents of the fish you breed, and their parents and so on. As for how many fish do you need to pair. Well, that seems obvious. Its 2. As for the what size tank question. You can breed them in a 20 gallon but if you have 50 fry you are going to need a large amount of tanks to raise them in.

Jim, I don't think you are understanding the questions. I am pretty sure when he asked the question about how many fish, he meant how many fish needed to be kept together in order for a pair to form between them, and the tank size was probably asking what sized tank to house that amount.

Oh. Well, then the answer is, I dont know. You can have 10 fish and get no pairs, while in the tank next to it you can have 10 fish and get 5 pairs. There is no real answer to that. The more the better, but if they are fish of poor quality than you are simply wasting your time trying to breed them. You're best option is to buy a breeding pair from a good source like Discus Hans.
