Hi
I am new to the site and would like any advice you can give me. I have a discus about 5 inches and he has started swimming head down, otherwise he is eating and swimming as normal, has anybody come accross this before and can give me some advice
thanks

Welcome! :good:

I have heard of this before, but carn't remember what it is called. But don't worry, Someone will let you know very soon! If you get no reply in the next 30 minutes, post it in the 'Emergency' section.

Hi Henryclan,

I have moved your topic to the 'New World Cichlids' section where you should get more specialised Discus advice.

Could you please tell us a little more about the tank the affected fish is in?

What fish are in the tank (species and numbers of each)?
What are your water test results like for Ammonia, NitrIte, NitrAte, pH and temperature? If possible, can you post numerical result and the test kit you are using?
How old is the tank?
Is it just this fish showing these symptoms?
How long have you had the affected fish?
Any Flicking, Rubbing or excess slime?

It sounds ATM like stress to me. the cause we can't really say, without more information. This said, there also isn't enough information yet to say it is stress for definite

All the best

In the tank is 4 discus and 2 angel fish
test results are fine
the tank is 2 years old
the discus in question was put in anothere tank 30 litres with another discus that had paired off with him, but the female laid 2 lots of eggs and wouldnt let the male fertilize them and she ate them. We deceided 2 put the discus back to their original tank as the discus in question started to swim face down and didnt look happy to us at all. We have had the affected fish for 3 months and there is no flickering, rubbing or excess slime. The discus is quite lively and eating and chasing the smaller fish as normal, but just swimming face down.

How long has it been since you moved the fish back across to the main tank?

With no flicking, rubbing or excess slime, parasites are unlikely, and the lack of these and good water stats make it unlikely anything is going on with the water. I assume the Angels aren't bullying them at all when you feed e.t.c? Has the colouration of this fish changed at all? Presumably, this behaviour is from just one of the fish?

It certainly sounds like just stress, so I'd be inclined to draw a blind eye to it unless you see anything more un-toward with hem/her :good:

Sounds like a swim bladder issue. Is the fish bloated? is it passing feces ok? If it is bloated you can treat it with epsom salt.
I have never had this problem with a fish so Ive looked for some info for you. Read the links.
