I have a deep blue/purple VT.

I bought it around 2 weeks ago from a LFS that had it in a tiny breeding box say 2" X 2".

Anywho, he's healthy and happy, swimming about and feeding as one would expect. Nothing makes me think he's ill in any way shape or form.

So, is this dull grey/black discolouration normal or a sign of age or stress from his placement in the shop?

I've look on the net and I cant find anything on it.

I have a few blue females; and my darkest one gets a darker colouration on her head.

Can you get a photo of when you got him and now?

Chances are he is just getting his natural colour baack after being stressed in the shop.

Dark blue bettas tend to have VERY dark heads.

I didnt take a photo of when I got it and I'll probs be unable to take a photo now as all I have is my phone and the quality is not great.

This is the exact same colour as mine and the dark grey/black dull colour turn into a purple stomach but continues down the spine.

My betta has the same coloration on his head. But he's not a dark color, he's orange and white. One thing I did notice about my guy is it get's lighter at night when the light is off, then as soon as the light comes back on it turns dark again. I never thought it was any type of health problem just that that was the color of him. But I am dealing with a case of fin rot, but everything I've read about fin rot in Bettas doesn't say anything about head discoloration. I'm curious about this as well now.

That's actually a type of coloration called a mask. They're quite desirable, truth be told. You'll find the masking in just about any coloration, even lighter-colored bettas.

Mines a bit lighter than that but its the same sort of shape and graduation. Maybe not as excessive.

Mine is more like a dry, dusty slate colour.

Like I say, he's happy and healthy enough just curious as to whether this is stress related from poor shop conditions and if he will regain full colour.

are you absolutely sure its just his colouring? not something on the surface of his skin?

^^

Yeah, mine has this slight green spot that I've seen on other fighters aswell.

Im assuming it wont grow out into full colour.

Shame :/
