this is for my 24g that will be replaced with a 50g as soon as it gets home with the rest of my stuff.

i can see arguments (sadly) for 2 and not 1. i'd be concerned about the fish too much and rush setting up the tank. plus i only have normal types of fish, nothing rare (apart from my pleco who will be rehomed in my 12g until i have the 50g set up,along with my amano's)

the down side to 2 is that i'd be in danger of recycling the tank, although i would be using the same kit in the 50g as in the 24g, just a new tank.

What do you mean by 'rush setting up the tank'? If you're moving 2hrs away then they'll be fine in a bucket, and the tank and filters would be ok too IMO, if you leave the filter in some tank water that'll help keep it alive during the trip, may just have to watch for a small cycle wont it's was set up again.

The only thing in my mind which decides whether you go for option 1 or 2, is whether you are actually attached to your fish.

If it was me, common or not there is no way I would sell my fish and just buy more, but that's because I've given them all stupid names etc :D
But it's you not me, and I think that if you're asking the question, then you are happy to sell them on and buy more later, so just go for 2.

Other: Keep the fish in the 24 until you move, then move the fish, set them up in your 50G in your new place, with the filter from the 24.

that's what i was planning if i were to do that.

i am attached to them but i'm just scared that i'll manage to harm them somehow. plus i've just had an unfortunate experience with a heater- it had + and - on it, so i put it in about midway along and thought it would be ok. i then found my male pandurini and two shrimps cooked :(

i think i'm just trying to get around making more mistakes at the other end

While I was in university I got a fish tank in my second year and from then on every september I would drive my fish north 3 hours to Sudbury and then in April I would drive them south back home 3 hours. That was for 4 years and in that tank I had some tetras that lasted 7 years.

If you are attached to your fish keep them and move them. It's not that bad.

What I do is take one of those plastic carriers and put in inside the bigger tank so it doesn't splash around and make a mess.

I think a lot of the decition depends on how attached you are to your fish. For one person fish keeping could just be to pass the time whilst another person could be seriously passionate about keeping their lovely fish. IMO I would take tank and fish.
