you can buy them, but with the cheaper ones you still have to take a sample of water and add an agent. You then put the test tube sample into the instrument and it basically compares the colour of the sample in the same way you would normally match it to a chart with your eye. They are still very expesive - beyond the reach of the average hobbiest I would say. They call them ion-specific meters.

You can also get ion-specific electrodes, like a pH one. I'm sure we would all love to have those! As far as I know these are large industrial things that cost an absolute fortune.

But there is an opportunity there, if you can develop ion-specific electrodes as small and cheap as pH ones then I'm sure you would be a very rich man. I reckon the problem would be chemical, the electronics to go with it would be easy.

i know 1 shop that advertises in PFk have a service for a computer read out for water chemistry.

""digging out a PFK**

Yep Dartford Aquatics.... "Computerised water testing service with a 2 page colour printout; analysis of your tank; colour coded results for ease of Understanding"

I'd like a digital pH meter and a digital thermometer. The pH one because it works out cheaper than buying test kits all the time (and I'd have fun playing around with it) and a thermometer because my heaters are rubbish.
