Countries around the world are suddenly jumping on the e-Karen child safety bandwagon and stopping people under 16 from using the internet. This is happening in the UK, America, Australia and other countries. In Australia we will be expected to provide a digital ID in order to use Google maps, use a search engine, view social media or visit forums, including this forum. I am not sure when the Australian ban comes into effect but heard September 2025 and then I heard December 2025. If I stop coming to the forum after those dates, it's because I don't have a digital ID and can't use the internet anymore even though I am old enough to be the grandfather of some of these idiots making these laws. People will suggest using a VPN but the Australian government is making them illegal to prevent people using them.

I'm sure other people here will have similar issues and this forum could go the way of the dodo if governments do lock down the internet in an attempt to control the people more.

This thread isn't about the idiots ruining countries, it's just to let people know that myself and others might not be here after these laws take effect. If you want to discuss it, please do so but try to keep politics out of it, even though it's caused by politicians.

Discus is code for revolution, and Angel fish, a request for sex, and pleco the code for the answers to the SAT's...

Angel Fish, Angel Fish, Angel Fish

I expect we'll all have reason to be unhappy when we see what rules arrive, but they haven't arrived yet, and haven't had an impact on the forum yet. There will be security issues with the software, no doubt, but there's nothing concrete for us to discuss. Our opinions expressed on a fish forum can only be vague and probably divisive - different countries have different contexts, and different people have different approaches.
We'll just spin in circles.

I don't usually advocate for Discus, but....

It is best to stay informed about the new laws (in Australia) before they take place in December.

listening to some music, with my morning caffeine, while I watch my fish...

Aerosmith -Living on the edge, just came on... seems appropriate to the thread...

Certainly, and that's an issue Australians are going to have to take up with power, whether it be corporate or governmental. As each country moves in this direction, as they will, there will be different political responses. Discussing Australian domestic politics, or Canadian, or US is local and becomes theoretical for an international forum.

I've been very politically involved in my society, and could see myself going in that direction again if needed. But that doesn't affect a fish forum. We've been relatively good at sidestepping those issues so we can continue to discuss with people we might not get along with on any subject except fishkeeping.

I have been up to date about the new UK (it's been taking effect now) and Australian laws (upcoming) and how they might impact the open web negatively. I've heard of the Australian Online Safety Act since late 2024 when the news started covering its passing.

It is just a secret plot for the govt to track people on the internet nothing more ;)

I tied to do more research on this after reading the thread but it wouldn’t let me it was just sitting there and not loading or doing anything
Im going to try this again later to see if my phone was just running slow
I did get one thing about the digital ID part and it said it was a security thing to protect your identity…..
