Mine are about 4 weeks old..some color coming in most of them..some have really grown and some are still pretty small..

How do you tell the difference? I read on a site that you can tell when they are 3 weeks old..??

When is the best time to seperate them?

:dunno:

well personaly I can sex mine at about 1-2 weeks.

You tell the differance the same way as any livebearer, female's have a normal anal fin and males have a rod like anal fin, (like a fishy willy).

May have to look realy realy close if they still small, most of my fry the it's been easyer to tell by there gravied spot, I find the females have this way before the fins develop on the males.

Seperate as soom as they are sexable, as once the male has developed he can mate.

Really, 1-2 weeks? Most of mine are over a month old and they all still look like females - no gonopodiums and the fanned anal fin.

At a couple of weeks old about two thirds of them started to develop a gravid spot while the remaining third have no gravid spot and are generally slimmer. I've been assuming that these are the males, am I wrong? :/

The time to tell different sexes really varies alot, so you really cant get a good idea when you will be able to tell, but i got a niff now at telling guppy sexes at a really young age

You can tell by the shape of their tail, females tend to hav the more rounded tail, where as male, there tail fin seems to be more raise at the top than at the bottom, meaning they are developing there nice big tails in which they will put colours into, to attract the females...

It aint always like this, so dont worry if your is nothing like this, but this is a sure way of telling what sex they will be once you get a "clear" view of there tail

I wish it was this simple with swordtails, it took a whole year before one of my swordtails actually turned male! o_O

Thanks guys, I would like to say the above information was useful but unfortunately it wasn't..

I still have no clue how to differentiate them..they all look the same to me..fanned fin tail and some have developed black spots on the tail and it started turning yellowish..

Yeah, most of the guppies will start out with dull bodies, but it gets suprising the colours they get in their tails whether male or female, and how they always seem to have their mothers colours

;)

in my experience it is just a matter of how fast the fry are developing. if you know what characteristics to look for when sexing, as soon as they develop you should be able to tell.

my male guppy's have started out with yellowish tails and black spots as you described and slowly developed their mature colors whatever they may be.

just be patient and keep a look out.

it also supposedly has something to do with water temperature. i had a batch of about 35 molly fry and i kept wondering when i would be able to tell male from female. now more than 6 months later, they're all female. i read that depending on the temp of the water, it can have an outcome on the sex of the fry.

as for swordtail fry, i could tell one was a male by about 6-8 weeks. still no sword, but he's got the gonopodium thing.
