Difference Between Sand And Coral Sand?

I dont think coral sand is suitable for tropicasl tanks unless its a high Ph tank such as a lake malawi set up. It rises the Ph of the water.

Hi. In geological terms the word sand refers to grain size. Boulders eventually wear and break down until they get smaller and smaller until eventually they are sand sized grains. Depending on where the sand comes from, the sand will be made up of different materials. Black coloured sand may come from an area that has volcanic rock which is black that has worn down into sand sized grains. So just about any material can be sand. Coral sand just means coral that is sand sized. It's just pieces of coral that have been crushed down to a fine sand size. You can use it in your aquarium if you like but it will raise the pH of your water considerably. People with marine tanks or cichlid tanks often use it.

Hope this helps.

Indeed, coral sand will leach calcium and other minerals, therefore raising the pH. It is often used to buffer soft water to make it suitable for hard-water fish.
