I noticed this afternoon my Central american cichlid tank got cloudy all of a sudden. I ammidately tested the water and ammonia and nitates were at 0 and my nitrites were at 1.5. I had fed them about 10 minutes before it went cloudy so i checked the food in some water and it didn't cloud up. once the water cleared up some i noticed the fish were real lathargic and moveing around much and then noticed my water heater looked odd. I looked a little closer and saw it was broke in half. I then unplugged the heater and removed the pieces and in doing so the water got cloudy again. my local fish store was closed at this time so i replaced it with one from wallmart. i am thinking the fish got a lil jolt from this and i was wondering if theres anything i could do to help them? I did try to feed them again and they had no interest in eating. any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Water change, run some fresh black carbon and also replace filter floss with new.
Look out for a bent spine as stray voltage in a tank can cause a fish to have a bent spine.
Good luck.

i don't see any bent spines , the carbon is in now and the water is being changed. Should i do a 50% water change?

Not sure on size of tank say a 30%.
Good luck.

I did a 60% water change. I have a habit of overdoing it on my water changes. The fish are comeing out and showing activity but i have yet to see them eat. I might just go get some ghost shrimp and see if i can get them going again. Bye the way what was all that sediment the heater put into my tank?

Don't know that why you need to do a water change and run some fresh black carbon and also new floss or matting.

When i did the water change i removed all decor and and gave the gravel a supervac. I added some carbon to my ugf where its pumped by air. The fluval canister i left alone. All the fish seem to be back to there normal behavior tonite and they ate tonite also. It seems like they escaped any harm ( except for the what the hell was that jolt from syndrone). Thanks for your advice , this was actually the first time i had a piece of equipment fail on me like this.

Glad everything back to normal, well done.
