Hello,

Until i can get a light for my 5gln hex tank, will a desk lamp over the top be enough to keep the plants alive?

:fish:

depends on the desk lamp, the bulb that the lamp uses, etc :) if you give us more info on the bulb of the lamp maybe we could help you out more ":)

assuming it's a normal household bulb it will keep java fern alive but not a lot else.

you need compact flourescents to get plants going in there. but other than that i cant help as i have a 40G rectangular tank

i suggest to use the FLURCENT (BRULUX) LAMP

IT'S VERY GOOD FOR PLANT'S

AND U SHOULD BE TURN ON THE LIGHT FROM 8 TO 12 HOURS

GOOD LUCK

Those lights are good, here is a pic of my desk light/fish tank using that light. The setup is by Azoo, the tank is made from extra high lead glass (almost lead crystal) it is quite cool, if you are in the UK not many places seem to have them yet.

p.s. the fish in there are glass not real before anyone tells me its too small to keep fish in.
