I think my Denisons Barb has something stuck in its mouth, I have read a little about this. He only has one gill working, it is “flared” out a little too, the other gill is flat against his body and does not move.

The fish also shakes his head, and rubs his gills and side on the substrate and drift wood.(there are no signs of any other diseases that are typically manifested in the fish by the fish rubbing its sides)

This fish was bullied to the point of almost death , he had red ulcerations and was in bad shape. This happened overnight once and then I moved this fish to a 21g tank with 17 neons in it.

Since the move(two weeks ago)to the 21g the fish has recovered allot: he started eating a bit, then started eating allot and swimming around allot again, apparently back to normal, except his one gill….

Anything I can do?

Is the gill red or inflamed looking at all? Is the fish breathing heavily or gasping? How is its activity levels?

The working gill is a bit flared out or frayed around its edges, the gill that is not working (gill does not move and is tight against the body) has no signs of disease of injury other than the fact that is not moving at all (for 2-3 weeks now). The fish does open his mouth wide, like gasping, occasionally, it looks like yawning...

His activity is relatively high, considering he has no species friends now and is in a small 21g...Right now he his bouncing off the fine sand like substrate and rubbing his WORKING gill on the substrate and wood.

I can show you a web cam of the fish live, if you request…

Thanks for the help, noone seems to reply to this one....:)

Just add some melafix for now and see how he goes.
