Hi guy's and gals, just curious who has some Denisoni Barbs and how many you have got?

I have 11 about 3/4" in a 340ltr tank with some colombian tetra's and a group of 11 l134 peckolita's.

Also has anyone ever had anything change in their parameter's or setups that have caused possible mating ritual's? or at least possible signs, Id be really interested how people have got on with them.

Thanks for any input

Paul

I am relatively certain they have not been bred in aquariums yet. In the wild they an only be collected seasonally and now they are being farmed over there because they are becoming endangered if they are not already so. I went through a couple of groups over the past 5 or 6 years and never saw even the slightest indication of spawning.

I have read that there is some cross breeding going on in India to produce color variations :( Such a shame because if you have the true wild ones in a good tank they are truly amazing looking, especially when they get bigger. Their colors become electric and they get a lovely shade of olive green to their scales which is edged in a delicate lighter green line. This becomes apparent when you view them from above.

aparently chester zoo are one of the very few places that have bred them in captivity.

you are local to me, by any chance did you buy 4 from me last month? im kev from stockton.

i see you have 11 L134s aswell. u had any look with them spawning or are they too young?

I aint yet! Cant bloody believe it to be honest, I wish they would!

I have got the setup i think for them to maybe breed, got 12 actual slate caves and tube's which they all seem to like and loads more hidey hole's but no joy yet. Think I am going to have to try and change some of the water param's or something to kick them off!

Fingers crossed anyways!

yeah i got a group of 9 from one guy of which some if not most are i would say fully grown, a couple of giant ones he said were a pair but they have obviously split up after being transferred and just never really settled back together.

Would be helpfull if anyone out that had some to swap just to mix the group up a bit too!

Im in the process of just dropping the temp in the water and have also just got myself an air stone going in there too, was in an old tank and thought i would get it in there for the sake of it, sure that will have a slight help in some way or other too.

do you have a smaller tank to seperate some of the bigger ones. just try adding a male and two females to a smaller tank, let them settle and feed them well for a couple of weeks. provide a couple of breeding holes for the male then hopefully with a cooler water change it might spur on some spawning behaviour.

if i had a spare tank id "borrow" a few to get them going for you lol. my plecs seem to spawn well in my water. good luck though, ideally you want them in another tank as bringing them up will be slow and difficult in a community set up.

Yeh I know it would be a tad more difficult in there, I ain't really trying to get them to breed i just think they are beautiful fish! If they do happen to spawn BONUS but on the other hand i guess there could be some serious cash in it if they did breed. hmmm I sense a plan!

Anyone ever tried suspending a plastic tank within their normal tank to breed them, as i think this would be the only viable way of doing it i guess. If i secured it on both sides and maybe just used an air filter for the time being seen as though i only have two Rena XPs running then I am sure it would be possible. Maybe something like a 40ltr tub, and just secure it across the two brace bars and maybe over the edge so it doesn;t move. Then I could easily manage the fishy's, they would keep at the tanks temperature and Moving them would be simple if they managed to hatch.

Or..... If i could find a tub ( as i think a tank is going to mean when out of use it cant really be used or put away) to fit on my shelf which i guess would be about 15" x 12" I would be able to go from there!

Ideas??

i would seriously consider another set up for them if you are dead set on breeding them. they would be so hard to change the water and give them the proper care in the setup you described. either way just enjoy them as they are a lovely fish.

Yeah well my girlfriend had a little elite tank cant remember if it was just 60 or 90ltr either way its going to be big enough for me to put in 3/5 of the fish in the short term. just considering the filter/heater situation now!

for my 60litre bn breeding setup i use a 50w heater and run a fluval 3+ on the lowest setting and a small sponge filter. the sponge filter is there for a grazing spot for the fry mainly. oh and when the fry are out and about i leave the light on for 12 hours a day for extra algae. you wont need as bigger filter because my bn plecs will produce more waste than your L134s will.
