Female is turning yellow. I think she is brooding eggs. Male and female both showed signs of yellow coloration. Treated for ICK a month ago, male cleared up, but female has gotten yellow all over. Is this still Ick or something else or normal for female with eggs in her mouth?? Both male and female have one really yellow small spot on their tails. Related problem?

Neither Demasoni gender change colour at any stage of their lives, including the rarer Mozambique genus.

Sounds like you have a case of mistaken identity i'm afraid, could be Elongatus Mpanga. Any chance of some pics?

The spots you mentioned are called eggspots and are perfectly normal, indeed most Mbuna have them. Here's a link with more detailed info:

maybe you have a female Pseudotropheus saulosi or erm.... some cross bread fish

the elongatus mpanga is a good call methinks Ferris

saw one in a shop in Cymbran last weekend and did not recognise her as she had a faceful and was distictly blue and yellow striped..

Thanks Ferris and Druchi. Boo Nick! Couldn't figure out how to post images requested by Ferris, but after input that I probably have case of misidentified pair, took images to store where the fish were bought and was told that I had a pair of kennyi not demasoni. Not real happy about that as I thought a year ago that I was buying demasoni. Now I have another question. They are telling me that the smaller yellowing one is the male. So why is he hiding and not eating?? 8)

If they are Kenyi, the smaller one turning yellow will indeed be a male.

As to why he's hiding and not eating, there are so many possibilities i'm afraid - are there any signs of illness like whitespot or fungus? Does he have a slightly shrunken stomach? Is he being bullied by another fish?

Thanks Ferris. No sunken stomach or bullying, but overal sickly looking. Will remove to separate tank for observation and treatment with antibacterial and parasite meds. May treat main tank once as precaution.
