ok well i am planning on getting a bunch of these little demasoni's and maybe some labs or something else yellow and compatible. i have my tank empty with 3 pieced of drift wood and two coconut caves, i have some black PVS pipe and can get some rocks, but how else would you put this tank together with the things i have right now, or would you add something else ? thanks

tank pic is on my webpage - http://community.webshots.com/user/bsmith000

I would suggest having as many rocks as you can fit.....

The 40 gallon? it will need alot more rocks
being a very agresive mbuna though it's usually suggested to go for a 55gallon and up with these shared with something with a more competitive temperment then yellow labs, also make sure they have extra females per males say 1:5, be willing to vent these too to get the right ratio, basically I'm saying these aren't a bigginer fish I hear you always get deaths with demasoni groups, consider something else if you can, it'll save you some frustration

A souliosi group will give you a couple demasoni looking fishies, and then the yellow fish, as species tank can also be alot easier to set up and souliosio are also dimorphic it's a nice easy setup, for extra blue or yellow a male peacock

But you still need a lot of rocks added to that tank

Hmmm....I am sorry, but I cannot agree with not having caeruleus with the demasoni, I had that exact set-up (well close) with my demasoni breeding group, 3 males and 10 females in a 45 gallon with my hybrid caeruleus/perlmutt fish. The hybrids were never touched by the demasoni, but I also had a TON of rocks in the tank. As long as you have enough hiding spots for the demasoni, they will be fine and the yellows will give your tank the look you are looking for. As for the saulosi looking like demasoni, no offense, but to me, they look nothing like a demasoni. :/

I meant yellow female soulisosi,(freshcichlid is looking for nice blue/yellow stock) I don't think it's the best option to put caeruleus with demasoni, but it can work caeruleus are tough enough to do well with almost any cichlid

They are different but for some close enough and for a beginner a much easier fish to keep

But if it worked for freshmike I'm sure turn out fine, just be carefull

Labs will be fine with Demasoni, Demasoni are only aggressive towards their own species or similar looking fish like Elongatus. Also labs grow much bigger than Demasoni and will be able to take care of themselves. The problem would be the Demasoni themselves, they really don't like their own kind.

I'm in the process of setting up (or will be soon) a cichlid tank, so would it then be ok to have just one Demasoni in a tank with none other of its kind? I was planning on having Pseudotropheus Saulosi and Labidochromis Caeruleus.

Thanks

Steph

Ozzie, the Saulosi males look too much like Demasoni and the Saulosi wouldn't stand a chance against him.

Labs and Demasoni are fine together, they'll each do their own thing.

A lot of great points have been brought out here, and i agree with everyone. the demasoni/lab setup is a very hard setup and with my experience in fish, and the known aggression makes it hard for a person to make it work, and i agree with some of you when you say that a Saulosi species tank would work great, my only problem is that like VantgE said, i am looking for a blue/yellow mix, i think in that tank i would keep 10females and 4-5 males, in those 4-5 males you will have one dominant male which will show his colors and maybe 2 others, so 2 out of 15 fish will be blue and the rest yellow, that is too much yellow for me and i dont like peacocks so thats not an option,

 NEW OPTIONS:
1. 3/7 saulosi, 2male afra ( they are blue ). ??
2. i found a site that sells true blue electric johanni's, males and females blue.
3.i also saw something called a Melanochromis Cyaneorhabdos, is this the electric blue or another species that i can have ?

I don't know about the labs and desamoni I had some together the desamoni was the smallest fish and the lab was the biggest and the labb was still picked on. I geuss we all have different experiences.

I'm not sure what your asking freshcichlid but either johhanni or cyanorhabdos would work, but not toghether

I don't know what the difference between johanni and elctric blue johanni is myself but I'm sure someone could comment I hear the electric are more agresive

well i was wondering what the difference between a johanni or cyanorhabdos is, and if they will be compatible wit hyellow labs ?
